Late Summer,
2004 - One of my all time favorite bands.. hands down.. the Beachwood Sparks.
I can recall reading some bad reviews from Black Crowe fans who had seen the
Sparks open up for the Crowes. Some fans really liked the band while others
totally seemed to hate them because of their "sound". I've always
been drawn to country rock so the idea of psychedelic rock with a hint of twang
really fascinated me. I really wanted to check them out and couldn't see why
they weren't liked by a lot of the Black Crowe fans.
So, I sampled some of their
tracks online and even I really didn't like the sound to be quite honest. My
first impression was "Why is that guy singing that way?"..
My first impression wasn't accurate.
I opened up my mind a little bit and slowly started to "get" what it was all about. I bought their first record and that completely sold me. I knew the band was special and that I would be listening to them a whole lot, especially the first record. And, that is exactly what happened. That first Beachwood Sparks record could stay in my cd player until the end of time and I would never get tired of it. The music that they made together is absolutely brilliant and will remain that way forever. Chris Gunst is now one of my favorite singers. His new record "Mystic Chords of Memory" certainly doesn't disappoint. It's a musical masterpiece that includes Electronica, Folk, Psychedelic, and even a little bit of Country music.
Ever since the Beachwood Sparks broke up, Chris and I have been trying to set up this interview. We finally recorded something in late July, 2004. It was a blast and I hope you enjoy our ramblings. Thank you, thank you very much.
